RSS Feed/News Required custom field not being enforced

I have a problem similar to this one and I just have a simple dropdown that the user is required to select. Unfortunately this is not being required and users can just blow by it without a selection in the custom field. I am guessing that there is something that I may be missing even though the box is checked to be required?
