RSS Feed/News Deleting an email address - can member still log in?

This question is specifically about users email addresses. If I delete a user's email address in their account, can they still log in? Have established that the current email address is invalid. They are not contactable and user state appears as Awaiting email confirmation (from edit).

Will removing the old, invalid, email address prevent them from logging in? Basically I don't want to close the account in case they come back, but can't set it to valid without a valid email address...
