RSS Feed/News Custom Discussion Type

How can I make a custom discussion type for my add-on? I'd like to be able to set the discussion_type on a thread to make it easier to distinguish when a thread belongs to my add-on or not. I'd also like to be able to set it so that all threads in a specific forum can only be of discussion type "my_threadtype".

I've done it once before, but now I can't figure out how to do it again.
